＋Today's offering showcases this uncommon and very collectable Rolex Oyster Perpetual model #6103. Produced in limited numbers for a brief period of time in the early 1950's, these exclusive early Oyster Perpetual Date watches are fine and desirable.
It is a so-called Ovettone (Italian for "large egg"), named for the large Bubbleback case, although it has a fully curved case, unlike the solid gold 6105's which also have a date.
The 6105 was also one of the relatively few Rolex models to feature the short-lived Super Oyster crown which was produced for only three years. The “Super-Oyster” winding crown was an attempt by Rolex to create a waterproof winding crown which did not need to be screwed down. While the system itself worked, in time the rubber seal perished and therefore this crown type was phased out after only a few years of production.
Housed in one of Rolex's water-tight Oyster cases, the wristwatch originally offered its owner complete protection against water, dust, and perspiration. Inside the rugged case Rolex placed their legendary Cal. A296 so-called "Bubbleback" self-winding movement, keeping the watch powered by only movements of the wrist.
Being an Ovettone and and also having a Super Oyster crown makes 6103's desirable...these interesting, seldom seen watches served as the precursors to the modern Oyster Perpetual.
Its thick case with engine turned indexed bezel, which added a touch of extra class to the mid-century Oyster, presents in excellent condition.
Its case is scratch-free and has been previously polished. It presents nicely on the wrist. Its dial has been previously custom refinished with vintage sepia toned Arabic and baton indices.
One of our watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it. It is keeping very accurate time.
For the finishing touch we have equipped it with a brand new crocodile strap making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year international warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance.
